Dancing with Parkinson's!
This joyful dance program is designed specifically for people with Parkinson’s disease. And we have found that people with all types of movement challenges have benefitted!
The classes are a combination of being led in dynamic movements, accessible dance steps, and opportunities to experience one’s natural movement and creativity. Whether standing or sitting, all ability levels benefit; walkers and wheelchairs welcome. Family members or care partners should plan to join us too. Just bring your “two left feet” and a willingness to try something new.
This class was featured in Maine Public Broadcasting Network's special, Easing the Burden. Watch it here.Read other local press: Midcoast's Herald Gazette, and Portland's Press Herald.
Exciting music and clear examples invite you to explore new movements and concepts, to move with the music, and to feel comfort and ease in your movement. The music is carefully chosen to help us embody each type of movement. The movements are selected and modified specifically for people with Parkinson’s, and will be adapted according to each individual’s ability. Many people with other types of movement challenges report they have benefitted from these classes. Classes includes diverse dance and movement genres (jazz, tap, modern, african, ballet, yoga, chi gong, waltz, cha cha, salsa, marches and more). Movements will be rhythmic, fluid, delicious, exciting, grounding, centering, purposeful, or full of breath, and they will become uniquely your own. Thanks to the leadership and inspiration of the Mark Morris Dance Group and the Brooklyn Parkinson’s Group, dance programs for people with Parkinson’s are emerging all over the country. Be part of the excitement!
